We’re on Baby Bird Watch!
BREAKING NEWS: We are currently on baby bird watch! This last week, we discovered that a bird has built a nest in the wreath on our front door, and she has laid eggs!
I’ve only caught quick glimpses of her as she flies out of her nest, but she is brown and white and has brown speckles on her belly. I know absolutely nothing about birds, but after coming across The Birders Report online, I emailed photos to them for an ID. Momma Bird is a Carolina Wren!
Larry from The Birders Report said that Carolina Wrens are tight nesters, which means that once the mom starts incubating, she only leaves the nest if approached closely. The dad brings her food while she incubates. To keep from disturbing this little bird family, we have blocked off the front door and are using our side door. But I will check up on them every couple of days to make sure that all is well. I can’t wait for the babies to hatch! We are expecting them sometime next week!
What does this have to do with cats, you ask? Well, do you see the white hair inside the nest? That is Sophie’s fur! Whenever I brush the kitties, I always throw their fur clumps out into the yard for the birds to use. I’m glad to see it’s going to good use. And I like to think that Sophie has contributed to the lives and well-beings of these birdies ๐

Ha!! I do the same with Cody’s fur and Dakota’s! We have had a nest on the ladder on our balcony for two years. The Mom was really good at shielding the babies, we heard them like crazy but never caught a glimpse of them!
Sam and Teddy says
YAY Sophie! You’re keeping those little eggs cozy and the little babies will love snuggling up to your furs too! Very exciting – we’ve had house wrens in our door wreaths before – nearly drove Sammy nuts with their bird calls when the babies were hungry but they were fun to watch when they were learning to fly!
Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

We have a robin’s nest in our magnolia bush right by our patio. The mom looked the other day and the eggs had hatched! Won’t be long before we see baby robins hoping around on the ground. ๐

That is a great idea to help the birds. I toss my yarn scraps out for ours.

We’ve heard about birds liking cat fur for nests. Mom Paula keeps forgetting to throw ours out for the birds.
We are slowly reconnecting with our friends since Mom Paula retired and hope to see you more often.

That is so exciting! Our Mama remembers a robin building her nest on the window sill of her house. It was so exciting to anticipate the arrival of the babies! Let us know when they hatch and how many babies there are!
Sending love to all of you ๐

I’m glad to know I wouldn’t be the only one to alter my habits for the well-being and safety of animals. I love that the wrens are using Sophie’s fur … just goes to show that each of us can have an impact on the others around us without even realizing it!

How sweet that Sophie is helping keep those wrens cozy!
Today petcretary saw a hairy woodpecker, eating the peanuts…she thought…but each time he had one he flew off and gave it to a smaller woodpecker on the nearby tree! He was feeding his young un!

Can’t wait to see your hatchlings when they arrive. This is a favorite spot for birds to make nests. We always have a couple of nests in the carport. Mom noticed yesterday that there is at least one baby bird in the newer nest. She saw mom bird feeding it. We don’t know if there are any more. Keep those birdies safe when they begin to fly. They are really easy for predators to catch. Love and 23456789876543234543456543234567890987890987656789876545678909876545678909876 kisses to Sampy from Astrid
