Radagast the Orange Joins the KCC Gang | Adopt a Shelter Cat Month
I apologize for being MIA this week, but it’s been for good reason! This past Sunday we added another kitty to our ever-expanding family. I’m am excited to introduce you to Radagast! Radagast the Orange, to be specific; affectionately known as Raddy, our newest handicat extraordinaire. What better way to celebrate Adopt a Shelter Cat Month, right? 😀
We weren’t planning on adopting another cat. In fact, Bobby and I had recently spoken of adopting a dog. Not serious talks, just in-passing, maybe-one-day-in-the-future type of discussions. But when I got a text from Sophie’s foster mom early last week with photos and description of an adorable two-year-old orange tabby cat with disabled back legs, that was it. Rebecca, you know my weakness!
The vets are unsure what the cause of Raddy’s disability is. They have said possibly malnutrition prevented his back legs from growing properly as a kitten. The muscles and tendons in his back legs seem to have just not fully formed. When he walks, his back legs remain bent. The best way I can describe it is to picture a person crouching down and walking.

Raddy isn’t in any pain, he gets around very well, and he uses the litter box just fine. He can’t jump though, so he climbs instead. He has even climbed up onto our cat tree! The vet said that there is a chance his condition could improve with some physical therapy. For a few minutes every day I will be spending time with Raddy stretching out his back legs and helping him to reach full range of motion. This may or may not work, we will just have to wait and see.
Raddy came to Circle of Friends Animal Society from Macon Bibb Animal Welfare. He was an owner surrender (for unknown reasons, with no indication of a disability by said-owner) and was on death-row because of his disability. COFAS pulled him and he went to a foster home for a few weeks before joining our family a few days ago.
Raddy has already seamlessly fit in here with the rest of the KCC Gang. Everyone has accepted him, and it seems like he’s always been here. He joins in for group playtime, he sings in the kitty choir at meal times, he hangs out on the tree with his brothers, and he joins us in bed at the end of the day. His favorite thing is snuggling, for sure, and he even loves belly rubs 🙂
You may be wondering about his name. He is named after my favorite character from The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit books and movies – Radagast the Brown. Radagast is an eccentric wizard whose primary concern is the care of the animals of Middle Earth. In The Hobbit movie, he has a family of birds that lives on his head underneath his hat, he communes and cares for hedgehogs, and his mode of transportation is a sled pulled by rabbits. I’ve always wanted to name a pet after Radagast, and when I met this sweet little orange kitty and heard from his foster mom that he let her foster kittens “nurse” on him, I knew I had found my Radagast!
I may not know where Raddy came from, but I know where he belongs. Right here with us, living the life of kitty-luxury. Welcome to the family, Radagast!

Raddy sure doesn’t let his back legs get in the way of having a good time! I’m glad he is already a great fit with your family. He is perfect as he is, of course, but it will be interesting to see if physical therapy improves his mobility any.

Love at first sight! So happy for you. I fostered a cat with a similar disability, and PT did wonders for him! He also could go anywhere by climbing instead of jumping. Probably just being in an interactive family like yours will help Rad improve.
