Did you know?
- According to a recent survey done by Petfinder.com, 95% of rescues have pets they consider to be “less-adoptable”
- 33% of shelters say they have pets that have been posted on the Petfinder site for 1-2 years
- 27% say they have had pets who have been posted and waiting for their forever family for more than 2 years
So who are these “less-adoptable” animals? They are the disabled ones, the senior ones, the ones with three legs or one eye, the ones with black coats, the blind ones, the ones that require special medication… the ones that especially need a family to love them. It breaks my heart knowing that there are perfectly wonderful and loving animals out there who have been waiting for a family to call their own for OVER 2 YEARS, simply because they aren’t someone’s idea of perfect.
My husband and I have welcomed five “less-adoptable” cats into our family since we’ve been married, so I speak from experience when I say that there is nothing like sharing your home with a “less-adoptable.” I love all my cats equally and don’t play favorites, but there is something special about the bond formed with an animal who has been ignored, left behind, or abandoned just because they are different. Not to mention the indescribable feeling when you get to watch them overcome an obstacle, come out of their shell, or just be their silly selves.
“Less-adoptable” does not mean “less-lovable.” It could even be argued that it means quite the opposite. In fact, I like to think of these “less-adoptables” as having special features rather than disabilities or shortcomings. These special features enhance their personalities and make them… well, extra-special!
So if you are thinking about adding a furry furiend to your family, I suggest considering one with a special feature or two. You won’t regret it. I guarantee you that not only will your family grow, but your heart will too.

It’s so hard to believe that such awesome kitties as yours are considered less adoptable! My human and I have had the pleasure of meeting Sophie, and she’s amazing!

I agree 100% that your “less-adoptable” kitties are never “less-lovable.”
I hope more “less-adoptables” will be as lucky as your kitties and find loving homes that they deserve. xoxo

I love the “Less-adoptable” does not mean “less-lovable” sentiment. You two are awesome for opening your home to the four (and all) cats.

As far as we’re concerned, there are no less adoptable animals…just uneducated humans. Thanks for this post that helps educate them. 🙂

Beautiful post. I have many considered less adoptable including 3 black cats, Snowball who doesn’t even let me near her and KaTwo who has hyperesthresia.

What a beautiful feline family you have 🙂

All cats are adoptable. And humans just need to be educated about that fact. Gracie and Zoe are black kitties, who were a bonded, senior pair when we adopted them. We would not trade them for the world!
Raven says
Our last two adoptions would probably be considered less adoptable. Raven was a black 5 year old and Sammi was a 10 year old who was a recent front leg amputee. They were both perfect to us. Sammi is no longer living, but she was an amazing, personable, spunky kitty. Raven is one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever had. I wish more people would set aside their fears and preconceptions and adopt the “less adoptable” pets. Not only are they perfectly lovable, in many cases you learn more from a special needs kitty than you would from a “normal” cat.

I can’t believe these cuties are considered less adoptable! This does break my heart, because of how much love these cats can bring into a home!
Sam and Teddy says
If some animals are “less adoptable” then it’s because we humans have deemed them so – because they are every bit as lovable and sweet and deserving of a happy home as any other animal is. It’s heart-breaking to see them passed by at shelters and often spending their whole life there not knowing the security of a permanent and loving home. Bless you for “seeing” that in your sweet furrrramily members. They AND you are blessed indeed.
Hugs, Pam and Teddy too
Raven says
We adopted Sammi, a three-legged older kitty. She was wonderful. We’d consider adopting any “less adoptable” as long as we liked their personality – medical issues and missing body parts make no difference to us.
Cleo says
Cleo’s dad here- when we visited the shelter we visited all of the cute kittens and younger cats in their little cubicles, but then when we came upon Cleo in her glassed-in room just sitting there on the floor waiting for someone to visit her our hearts melted and we knew she’d be coming home with us. She is such a dear old fart and we enjoy her every single day.

Your kitties are lovable to the max, and they are as blessed to be in yor furmily as you are to have them as your own.
